A unique opportunity has arisen for a Lead Bioinformatician with the Oxford Biomedical Research Centre’s Genomic Medicine Theme based at the Wellcome Centre for Human Genetics at the University of Oxford working with Professor Jenny Taylor.
As Lead Bioinformatician who is an expert in analysing human genome sequence data, you will have responsibility for developing and applying bespoke bioinformatics pipelines for annotation and interpretation of rare disease and cancer genomes to identify pathogenic variants. Development of novel methods for analysis of copy number, structural and regulatory variants is particularly welcomed, as is the application of novel machine learning approaches for interrogation and integration of large ‘omics datasets.
The Lead Bioinformatician role offers opportunities for independent human genome research, with access to substantial genome datasets both in-house and through Oxford’s commitment to the UK’s national Genomics England 100,000 Genomes programme. You will offer strong leadership in bioinformatics as well as a collaborative approach to academic clinicians and scientists from multiple disciplines.
This is an exciting position for a very motivated and dynamic individual to combine leadership and research in bioinformatics in the context of the highly successful translational programme of the Oxford BRC and the internationally renowned research environment of the Wellcome Centre for Human Genetics.
You will have a PhD in bioinformatics or statistical genetics with strong postdoctoral experience in human genome sequence analysis. You will need excellent programming skills in languages such as Perl, C/C++, R, Python, Java, SQL or similar. You will have proven ability to develop novel bioinformatics tools and algorithms for analysis of genetic data and experience of implementing, improving and maintaining bioinformatics pipelines and troubleshooting problems. Experience of supervising other scientists and working as part of a team, communicating effectively at all levels, is essential.
The position is fixed-term for 3 years in the first instance with the possibility of extension and is funded by the Oxford Biomedical Research Centre.
