Tenure Track Professor in Molecular Aging
Gottfried Schatz Research Center for Cell Signaling, Metabolism and Aging
Division of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry
Full-time position (100%)
limited to 6 years
 
We are looking for an excellent MD/PhD or PhD with great potential to develop an internationally
renowned research agenda in the field of molecular aging.

The successful candidate is expected to conduct research in molecular biology and biochemistry and
teach postgraduate courses in the PhD programs at the Medical University of Graz. The new position
will complement research activities in the field of mitochondrial and energy metabolism with a special
focus on the molecular mechanisms of aging. The successful candidate will discover molecular
mechanisms of aging, identify potential therapeutic targets, and develop strategies and principles for
therapeutic intervention.

The initial appointment is limited to six years. After the conclusion of a qualification agreement the
career advancement goal is to transfer to a tenured position as an associate professor (tenure track
professor pursuant to § 99 para. 5 and 6 of the Universities Act). If the candidate demonstrates
outstanding and remarkable achievements, the qualification agreement may be fulfilled more quickly.
 
Core duties and responsibilities:

  • Conducting cutting-edge scientific research in the field of molecular aging and publishing high
  • quality, high impact papers
  • Establishing and leading an international multidisciplinary research group
  • Acquiring and taking the lead in third-party funded research projects
  • Teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, supervising PhD students, and mentoring and
  • promoting young researchers
  • Establishing and maintaining networks and collaborations with national and international
  • partner institutions
  • Giving lectures and seminars, attending conferences, hosting visitors, and organizing
  • conferences in the field
  • Supporting scientific and public outreach in his/her own research area (public lectures, media, etc.)

Successful candidates must have the following qualifications:

  • PhD or equivalent doctoral degree in pharmacy, biochemistry, molecular biology, or molecular medicine (or a similar discipline)
  • Experience in mitochondrial science and quantitative fluorescence microscopy
  • Experience with C. elegans or Danio rerio in aging/energy metabolism research
  • Postdoc experience for at least 2 years
  • Excellent track record with publications in the respective field in leading journals
  • Successful acquisition of peer-review research grant(s) or other third-party funding
  • Previous experience in (under)graduate teaching and/or in (co)supervising Diploma/PhD students  
  • Hgh level of proficiency in both written and spoken English (proficiency level C1)
  • Good knowledge in both written and spoken German (proficiency level B1)

The ideal candidate has the following profile:

  • Experience in high resolution respirometry, measurement of subcellular signal transduction, pharmacology, and compound testing
  • Pofessional experience abroad (e.g., research fellow, postdoc) and active participation in international networks
  • Willingness to cooperate, open-mindedness, and ability to work in teams
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Communication and social skills for working in an international environment
  • Outstanding level of motivation

Statutory information: The minimum remuneration is based on the collective agreement for
university employees (KV § 49.2). A higher salary for this position is contingent upon qualifications
and may be negotiated with the rector.
